The four seasons are the most important cycle in nature. And they are a symbol of the four stages of life. Spring is youth, Summer is adulthood, Autumn is middle age, and Winter is old age. The Celts saw an echo of entire lives in the turn of a single year. Again, as in so many other things, the Celts saw the large and the small, the macrocosm and the microcosm in the things that make up their lives. The four seasons also remind us of the four elements, the four directions, and the four winds. As above, so below. Through all the changes of life, the Celts still saw a constant sacred source: a gem in the center that sanctified their passage.
