Every Witch keeps a black book. Long before Gerald Gardner settled on the name Book of Shadows (his first working title was Ye Bok of Ye Art Magical), the Witch's grimoire was simply called the Black Book, and in the folklore of the Appalachians the word black never meant sinister. It meant secret, hidden, and kept close. In initiatory Witchcraft, the Book is copied out by hand by each Initiate and holds our rituals, our laws, our myths, and our magical systems. It is, as Brian Cain puts it, a "hint-book of reminders" for the Witch trained by voice and by hand rather than by paperback.
Not every Witch belongs to a coven, and not every magical book is a Book of Shadows. For the solitary practitioner and the ceremonial magician alike, the same blank volume becomes a grimoire: the working record of your spells, sigils, recipes, invocations, and the results they brought. Whatever you call yours, it deserves a binding that can survive years on the altar and a cover that means something. The journals here are leather, embossed with the symbols of our Craft, and built to be written in for a lifetime.
